The Purpose of Life & The Purpose of Yoga

The Purpose of Life ...
Do we come here to gather up all the toys, have all the good times, grab every gold ring we can, hoarding it all jealously, and then die?   When we die, we leave it all behind with our dust.

Do we live a joyful life, spreading joy throughout our days, to everyone we meet, enjoying what comes to us, using it in turn to create more joy for us and all sentient beings, and then die?   When we die, we leave nothing behind but our dust because all of our riches are invested in Joy and that goes with us.

The Purpose of Yoga ...
Do we come to Yoga to become beautiful, to relax, to become more flexible, working as hard at it as we can during practice, and then go back out into the world otherwise unchanged?  Growing older, we leave all those benefits behind along with our Yoga practice, as we rust.

Do we come to Yoga to find Joy, learn how to spread that joy to everyone we meet, enjoying any real feelings that come to us, and using those real feelings to create more joy for us and all sentient beings, and then go out into the world changed indeed?  Growing older, our physical Yoga practice may be left behind, but the great Joy goes with us.

  1. Kate: this is a beautiful thought and beautifully expressed! I love the idea of coming to yoga to be changed, to take something new and wonderful with us back to our world. Your yoga classes certainly offer that opportunity! :-)
